THE METHOD

A straight path from to .

01Learn a row

Five characters at a time, in real gojūon order — each with a mnemonic and native audio.

NEXT
"tsu" — a tsunami wave curling over.
02Drill it five ways

Recognise twice, then reverse, listening, type. Miss one and the mnemonic comes back — and a row only unlocks the next on a clean 100% run.

QUESTIONS

Before you start

How long does it take to learn hiragana?

Most people can read the 46 basic hiragana in about a week doing 5 to 10 minutes a day. The dakuten versions and combinations like きゃ come fast after that because they reuse the same shapes. Want to see them all first? Here's the full hiragana chart.

Should I learn hiragana or katakana first?

Hiragana first. It's used for grammar and native words in almost every sentence. Katakana is mostly loanwords and names, and it's easier once hiragana is solid. The katakana chart is here when you get there.

Is Kana no Michi free?

All 104 hiragana are free forever, with four drill modes, daily review and native audio. A one-time Study Unlock adds all 104 katakana and six more modes. There is no subscription and no ads.

Do I need an account?

No. Progress stays on your device. Sign in only if you want it to sync between devices.

Is it enough for JLPT N5?

Reading kana is the first thing N5 expects. Kana no Michi gets you reading all of it. Vocabulary and grammar come after, and they go much faster once you can read.

The path is 208 steps. Take the first one tonight.

Five minutes from now you'll read your first row of hiragana. Free, no account, offline in the app.
